So last night? I finished the first draft of JUMP. *cues streamers and confetti*
You know what this means, right? Yep. I thought I'd share a few stats.
Because nothing is more fun at a party than some numbers, AMIRIGHT?*
*crickets chirp*
Ahem. Anyways...
Chapters: 32 plus an epilogue.
Word Count: 67,161. Which is normal for me. I always tend to write shorter and then add stuff in revisions. I already have several notes about things that need added/expanded.
Draft Time: March 25, 2011 to July 25, 2011. I think this is really cool for two reasons. Not only did it take me four months to the day to write this draft, but I finished one year later TO THE DAY of when I saw Inception in the movie theater and first thought up the concept for this novel. Now. Let's just hope it's not another year before I have a finalized draft.
Random Stuff: Before starting this draft, I had started and abandoned two drafts (one of which made it to 22k -- which is a nice chunk of writing to pitch, I think, and it was terrifying to do so -- but totally worth it). I've had four different endings planned, and it's gone from an urban fantasy to just a plain 'ole fantasy and back to an urban fantasy. It's had two different titles. I've changed so many details so many times that I've lost track of what they are and how many times they've been changed. This novel has been a complete headache at times and I've even thought about ditching it a time or two.
But I'm glad that I didn't. Now it's time for the real work to start. Just not today. :D
*Don't let my love of stats fool you. I really hate numbers and all things math related. I'm a walking contradition, you say? Yes, yes I am.

Congratulations! It's wonderful that you've finished with the first draft. :)
ReplyDeleteYay, congratulations! Finishing first drafts is so amazing. Your experience sounds a lot like my last book, actually-- I had to pitch most of the first 30,000 words I wrote and start over. But in the end, the book was so much better for it!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the rewriting. It's always fun to make the book better and better. :)
