So I'm always curious about other writers - why they started writing, what made them choose the genres, what their processes/habits are, etc etc.
As the title suggests, this means I have three questions for you all, if you'd indulge me? *bats eyelashes* I'm leaving them open-ended, so you can share as much (or as little) as you'd like!

- What made you start writing?
- How did you choose your genre?
- What's your audience (adult, YA, MG, etc)? Why did you choose this?
1. I really don't remember, honestly. I've written little stories for as long as I can remember, but I do remember that I was 9 years old when I decided to write my first "novel." I did, and I haven't stopped since. Now it's just so ingrained in my mental makeup that I can't quite imagine not having it in my life.
ReplyDelete2. I've always been a big sci-fi & fantasy fan, and most of the stories I get in my head go along those lines. However, I do dabble in some contemporary/literary works. All depends on the story.
3. Adult. I don't think my ideas are fit for young eyes. :)
1. An idea popped into my head and I had to get it out before it explode in my brain. That would have been a mess to clean up ;-)
ReplyDelete2. Hmm. I didn't choose it as much as it chose me. I've always been drawn to this genre as a reader.
3. Adult. I'm afraid I might break the young'uns ;-)
Samantha, that would have been a mess! Good thing you got to writing. ;) And what genre do you write? I think I might have known, but have forgotten. :/ Sorry if I have!
ReplyDelete1. I've always had stories floating around in my head. Ever since I was younger. One day after I had my second baby, I decided to write them down!
ReplyDelete2. I have always LOVED fantasy. Urban, paranormal, anything with magic. So, naturally, I love writing it too!
3. I write YA. I just love all the possibilities writing a teenage voice. The first love, the heartache, the emotional journey. It's all fascinating to me and I honestly don't think I'll ever write anything else.
Thanks for this!! :D
1)I started writing seriously right after reading the first book of Stephen King's DARK TOWER series. I was so blown away and inspired. I just wanted to create something that would one day make someone feel even one one-hundredth of what Mr. King had made me feel.
ReplyDelete2)Fantasy is where it's at for me. I need escapism, to be elsewhere, and I want to give that to others. I have plans for stories in multiple sub-genres, but currently I write epic because it's a natural fit for me. I'd rather be in Middle Earth.
3)My main audience is adult, but I hope my current story interests teens as well. I love YA, but there was just never any question that I would write for an adult audience, because that's where my head is at.
Hi Kelly! Jacqueline Carey is for me what Stephen King was for you. I didn't start writing right after I read her first Kushiel's trilogy, but when I did start writing, she was (and still is) a big inspiration for me. And, I feel the same way about YA. I love it, and I've considered writing it, but just feel that adult is more for me. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to write, but didn't think I could do it. Two things happened:
ReplyDelete1. I ran out of books to read and money at the same time.
2. My husband made some comment about my imagination being awesome and that I should start writing stuff down. I did, and had my first novel two months later.
My genre chose me. I was a high school teacher before staying home with kids, I write MOSTLY YA, but women's as well. It depends on the age of my characters, since everything i write is TOTALLY character driven.
I think question three is answered by question two??
yeah, do a follow-up. That'd be fun :)
