By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead Book Review

I always intend to do book reviews here, and then I just never do. Until today! I read By The Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters Sunday and was sucked into it. In fact, I boycotted homework just so that I could finish it.

Here's the blurb from Peters' website:

Daelyn’s been the victim of bullying throughout her life and now she’s simply counting down the days until she can commit her final act on Earth. It’s destiny that she finds a Web site to help her in her quest. She has the motive, the means, and the determination. Then she meets this boy, Santana, who makes her examine her choice of death over life. But is he too late to save her? And is she too damaged to save him?

There are statistics at the end of the book. Seventy percent of all students say they feel affected by bullying, or about 25,000,000 students in the U.S. alone. In ages 15-24, suicide is the third leading cause of death.

That fact is, bullying happens. Often. And many times, no one knows that it's happening besides the bully and the bullied. This book is all about the serious consequences of bullying, of keeping silent if you are being bullied, and of adults brushing bullying off as though it weren't a big deal.

I think anyone who has been bullied (regardless the severity) can relate to the feelings that Daelyn experiences. Peters tackles a sensitive issue and brings attention to the fact that bullying is a big deal. It does happen, and it should not be ignored. Although this is a young adult book, I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

A big thanks to Colene for the Magical Blog Award! I'm especially honored to receive this award because it has the Eiffel Tower on it! (Which I love, think is beyond beautiful, and am dying to visit someday.) I pass this on to Jemi, L.T., Jessica, and Melissa!

Also, a quick scheduling note. Throughout December I'm going to continue my once a week posting due to the end of the semester, being out of town for a few days, and the holidays. Starting January I will be back to two a week!

  3. Sounds like a very important book, and relevant for these times. There's always a bully, isn't there? In every class or workplace. I know they're trying to make anti-bully zones in classes but it still exists.

Okay, that being said, you'd better go get your homework done!

  4. Thanks so much for the award - it's really beautiful! I appreciate the thought :)

The novel sounds like a good one to have in all high schools. There is so much going on below the surface of what adults see - we need to be so much more aware and ready to help. Really help - not just stick a bandaid on the problem. Thanks for sharing!

  5. You're welcome Jessica! :)

L.T. - I love the cover for this book, it and the title are what made me pick it up to check it out in the first place. And, you're welcome! :)

Amy - I know, even when schools and companies have a zero-tolerance policy, it still happens. And, I've been working on my homework especially hard the past couple days to make up for it! ;)

Jemi - You're welcome. :) I do think that this should be required reading in high school. It's so relevant to things that happen.
