List Mania

My name is Jessica, and I'm a listaholic.

Whew! I feel so much better now that I got that off my chest.

I keep lists for practically everything. It's how I keep track of things, and how I keep from going insane trying to remember things.

For my writing, I keep a list of all the characters I've created, and places I've used in my stories. I try not to use the same names/places more than once. I also keep a list of my works that includes the title, genre, word count, etc. for each work. For each novel, I keep a style sheet, which for me is a list of people and their roles, places, and pronunciations, if needed.

I like to have an outline of each project, even if it's very basic. Just so long as I have some kind of outline (or list) of how the story is going to go.

Are there any other listaholics out there? Or do any of you have any of your own confessions you need to get off your chest?

  1. I never write lists. In fact, I'm afraid of them. It means I have stuff to do!

  2. I write lists all the time. Most of the time they are my character names/places lik you do. I lik having a terminology/story reference guide in case I need it...and I do now since I'm writing a dystopian wip. lol.

  4. Jessica - I see you're point. I would just never remember what I needed to do without them! :)

Lindsay - Yeah, I've found the style sheets extremely helpful. They would definitely come in handy for a dystopian. XD

Laura - I agree! And, I'm so glad I'm not the only listaholic here! :)

  6. I'm a major list-girl. Sometimes, I get carried away with the lists! But it's a comfort to know I'm not alone. ;)

  7. I'm a list-maker too! But, I usually forget to take them with me (to the grocery store, when I go Christmas shopping or am out running errands...) For my writing, I have more scattered list-keeping habits. Like you, I hate to reuse character names or settings :))

  10. I am a listaholic. And I am SO HAPPY I'm not the only one.

I keep lists everywhere -- on my phone, near my desk, on the kitchen counter. There's pleasure in writing them and even more pleasure in crossing stuff out!

    Yes, I need help. :)

  11. TOTAL listaholic. My new obsession is "stickies" the computer program. It's lists that I can stack, pull up, make disappear and add to on a whim. Genius.

  12. Colene - That's how I am! I'd forget everything if I didn't keep lists.

L.T. - It is always nice to know there are others out there. I can get carried away sometimes, too. :)

Nicole - I'm bad at forgetting my lists too! We should work on that. ;)

Hannah - A lists of lists?! You may have just changed my life. XD

    Melissa - Thanks! I think . . . ;)

Jennifer - I love crossing stuff off my lists! :)

Jolene - Oh, that program sounds amazing!
