I Eat Books for Dinner

I don't know about you guys, but I have a habit of tearing through a book as quickly as possible.

For example, I finally read Mockingjay this weekend. I've been trying to find time to read this or weeks now, but just hadn't had time to get into it. But, I had some spare time this weekend, so I tore into it. Afterwards, I wished I had savored it longer.

This is usually how it goes. I devour a book as quickly as possible. And, if it tastes good, I devour it even more quickly.

But then I always have that feeling of "Oh, I should have savored it... I'll never feel that suspense of not knowing what's going to happen again." (I'm reminded of this cartoon by Inkygirl, except I don't feel it until after I've already read the book.)

Sometimes I wish I wasn't a devourer. Sometimes I wish I could savor a book longer. But, I can't. It's just not the type of reader I am.

What about you? Do you savor your books or do you devour them as though you're starved for words?

  1. I'm a savourer. I read REALLY slow. I wish I could devour!

  2. Haha, love the cartoon. I'm a bit of both. I tore through Mockingjay in a day, but I was sad when I got to the end. Sometimes I savour, but it depends how excited I am to read the book in question. Oh, and how much writing on my own wip I have to do. :)

  3. If I love it I'll blaze through. One book I have been "reading" for months just because I'm just not loving it. I just don't care enough about it, the characters the story to buzz through it in a day.

But a great book, I'm with you, I need to know, need to read. And the end comes so quickly and it
    s soooooooooo sad.

  4. I know exactly what you mean! I devour my books. I've always been a fast reader, which is kind of a bummer thing sometimes. I re-read books a lot, and even though I know what's going to happen, I still read them fast! I re-read the Harry Potter books every year around Christmas, and I tell myself I'm going to read them slow, savour them this time. But nope! Even though I know what's going to happen, I love the story so much I can't help but devour it!

It's so sad when great books come to an end. I love that first time reading experience!

  5. I am normally a devourer. Just about the only time I read slowly is when reading the book in question is more like choking down medicine than savoring a great meal.

However, when each of the last two Harry Potter books came out, I limited myself to a chapter a night in order to make them last! That took some serious willpower, let me tell ya. And it was a pretty big risk, since everyone else finished reading weeks before me, but I somehow managed to avoid spoilers. The only real problem I ran into with this method was that I spent a very sad 24 hours thinking Hagrid was dead. ;)

  7. I'm with Jessica. I read really REALLY slow. Have you noticed on my blog how I've been reading the same book for a month?? Yup, still reading it. I just take my time. It's like a whole season of a TV show. I take it an episode at a time and then wait until the next night. :D

  8. Rarely do I devour, but sometimes I wish I could. It would be fun to be able to read tons and tons all the time. Mostly I just read at a steady pace.

  9. Jessica - I'll trade you! :)

Suzi - I'm so glad I'm not the only one. XD

Lindsay - Yeah, the cartoon makes me giggle every time I see it. I was sad at the end of Mockingjay, too. But in a good way. :)

Colene - The pace of devouring depends on how good the book is. If I'm not into it, it will go a little more slowly, but I still get through it pretty quickly.

Laura - I love the first time reading experience, too. I don't re-read a whole lot... I re-read my all-time favorites, but that's about it. There's too many new things coming out all the time!

Kathy - I wish I had the willpower to only read a chapter a night! I just don't... I've tried it, and then I end up staying up waaaay past my bedtime to read just one more chapter... and then just one more chapter... it goes on and on. HA! :)

Hannah - Don't get me started on watching a whole season of a TV show on DVD, HA. I'm just as bad with those. Instead of watching an episode a night, I watch a DISC a night. Minimum. ;)

Amy - A steady pace is good! I try to slow myself down, but it never works. Once I get a taste, I can't put it down 'til it's gone! XD

  10. I DEVOUR and end up with the same feeling of regret. Fortunately, if the book is really good, my husband will let me read it out loud to him and so even though I don't get to savor the experience of the first read, I get to enjoy someone else's experience.

  11. I tend to devour, but every once in a while I force myself to savour. I flew through the first two Hunger Games books, and then took my time with Mockingjay.

  12. Jolene - That's so sweet of your husband!

Kelly - I just can't seem to force myself to savor. I wish I could sometimes!

  13. I can so relate to the cartoon!

And I can relate to what you say. I'm blessed/cursed with being a fast reader. So I rush through, especially at the end when I'm into a book. Then I have to go back and read the end because I'm like, "What?!" later.

I'd love to hear what you thought about Mockingjay. And yes, I rushed through it and reread the end.

  14. I used to devour books - before I started writing. Now I'm lucky I have an hour a day to read (during lunch), so I'm able to savor them.

But savoring is hard when you read a book you just don't want to put down!! But I think my employer would frown upon me being late from lunch because I was reading.

  15. Stacy - I know what you mean. I don't have as much time to read as I used to. Now it just ends up that I devour a book or two during the weekend, and I don't typcially do any reading at all during the week.
