Have you guys heard the term "place-bound?" If you haven't, be glad (well, if you're like me anyways). Every time I hear it, I cringe.
I cannot stand that term.
This is something that's been floating around in my head for years, since I first heard it used. I'm sure part of why I dislike the term is because I am place-bound. Since I've gotten older, I no longer mind being place-bound, but sometimes... it can be a suffocating feeling. I've also been able to get a better handle on why I dislike the term so much since reading Kelly's post last week where she shared that she's always wanted to be elsewhere.
Elsewhere.
That's the word that did it for me, that filled in all the blanks about why I dislike the term "place-bound." I've always felt that desire to be elsewhere, too. To just get away and get away fast. But I've always felt bound to where I am, to what I'm doing.
It's why I fell in love with reading, and later, with writing. For hours on end, I can slip between the words into a world other than my own and escape. It's these temporary escapes that have kept me grounded.
Because during the time that I spend immersed in that other world, I am no longer place-bound.
For a while, I'm free.
too right you are! place-bound makes my lip curl. I hate it. But sometimes life just wont allow anything else. And you're right, writing helps when you feel to stuck, to escape somewhere amazing.
ReplyDeleteWell said. Free...ahh. love that word though.
These kinds of feelings are what make books so necessary. I don't know what I would have done without them as a kid. I really don't know what I would do without them nowadays.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and thanks for linking to mine. I'm glad you were able to get a handle on why you dislike a term that I also cannot stand.
Freedom is what I feel from both reading and writing as well. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
ReplyDeleteColene - Thanks! It's good to know I'm not the only one who can't stand that term. :)
ReplyDeleteKelly - I know what you mean, I would have been lost without them as a kid, and I'd still be lost now. And, thank you!
Melissa - I agree! I wouldn't trade it for anything, either.
I get it too. And bad. It comes to the point where it feels like the air touching my skin burns and scratches.
ReplyDeleteI get intensely frustrated with being stuck in one place, but luckily I get to move to somewhere new in two months. WHOOO HOOO!
I know what you mean, Misha. And, that's awesome! I hope you're moving somewhere fun! :)
ReplyDeleteReading is the cheapest, easiest form of escape. It's nice to be someone else, somewhere else for awhile.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a great weekend.
Theresa, I agree!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I'm having a nice, quiet weekend. Hope you're having a great one, too! :)
