Morning Pages Update - Week 1

The first week on my morning pages trial is already over! It seems like it went by so fast. A couple of you mentioned that you were looking forward to my update, so I'll try to be insightful here!

In all seriousness, though, this practice has already helped uncover quite of few things. Some of these discoveries were how I felt about things that I wasn't even aware were bothering me. Others were things that I was aware of on some level, but the morning pages really helped to iron out exactly how I felt about them.

So, here are the writing-related discoveries (and one non-writing discovery) I've found over the past week:
  • I need to take my fiction writing less seriously. I've been so focused on The Dream, that I've forgotten that writing should be fun, first and foremost. I need to sit back, relax, and bring the fun back into it.
  • But at the same time, I need to write. Seriously, I get down when I don't write. And when I do write, I feel anywhere from peaceful and content to near-manic.
  • I want to start freelance writing. This is still in the "Hmm, how am I going to do this?" stage, but it's something that I'm really serious about and am going to start pushing towards.
  • I want to start working on my photography again. This came up nearly every day. When I started working on my writing seriously, my photography continuously got pushed to the back burner until it eventually fell off the stove altogether. And I miss it. So I'm going to get back to it. I also want to save up and buy the camera and software I wanted and never got, because I really need both of them to take my photography to the next level.
And a couple of things I've done because of the above discoveries:
  • I changed my method of writing. Instead of writing on the computer, I'm writing with good 'ole pen and paper. When I try to write on the computer, I get easily distracted and before I know it, I'm on the Internet and have completely forgotten that I was trying to write.
  • I've created a Flickr page to share my photography.
Whew! I know this was a lengthy post, and I apologize for that. I'll have an end-of-trial post next Monday, so be sure to come back for that if you're interested! I've been pretty happy with the results I've been getting so far, and I've already decided that I will probably continue my morning pages after my two-week trial ends, though perhaps not every single day. We'll see what this next week brings!

  1. Wondeful, Jessica! I'm glad the Pages helped you figure out some new things. I hope you keep at it!

I write with the "old fashioned" pencil and notebook, too. :) I eventually transfer over to the computer, but my creative juices get flowing so much better the old-fashioned way first!

  2. I used to do morning pages and they led me to write a new story idea every day for almost a year. I loved them, and they do teach us so much about our priorities in life.

I really resonated with the "writing should be fun" concept, as I've been working for the past few weeks on bringing the fun back into my writing.

Good luck. And can't wait to see your photographs. :)

  3. Thanks Laura! I've already noticed that my flow goes much better now that I've switched to paper and pen. :)

Julie - I think it's important to keep writing fun. And thanks! Hopefully I'll get out soon to work on my photography and have some new work to share with you all. :)

  4. Some great revelations there! I'm like you with the freelance thing, only it's the short story market for me. I'm petrified for some reason. Let's hope we both break in with good graces.

  5. Thanks Amy! I also have a few short stories that I'm working on and plan to send out when finished, it's just not going to be where my big push is. And I completely understand that petrified feeling, I'm feeling that, too! Good luck to you!! :)

  6. Thanks for the update Jessica, I'm glad it's been a good experience for you!

I also write with pen and paper. It frees my mind and I'm way less distracted.
